177th Semiannual General Conference Thoughts

We found out today that Elder Eyring replaces President Faust in the First Presidency. Also Elder Quinton L. Cook was called to fill the vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve. Elder Cook came and visited my mission in California (Arcadia) and told the story of his son who wanted to be a doctor until he found out doctors had to work occasionally on Saturday's. He didn't want to miss Saturday morning cartoons, so he decided he didn't want to be a doctor any more. Elder Cook mentioned in his talk that I reminded him of his son (I'm not sure if it was because I looked like him, or the fact that we share the same last name...).

After President Hinckley finished the sustaining vote, he invited the newly called General Authorities to take their seats. President Eyring took his seat next to President Hinckley and President Hinckley turned around and gave him a little love tap on top of President Eyring's head with his cane. I wonder if everyone else listening to conference could hear the laughter and wondered what had happened (it all happened off camera).

It was also very appropriate, that during his talk about love and charity, to see Elder Worthlin being supported by Elder Nelson, as he trembled trying to give his talk. That shows me how much brotherly love the Quorum of the Twelve have for one another. I liked the boldness with which Elder Holland and Elder Nelson spoke, regarding our standing as New Testament Christians and the need for additional scripture. I sometimes wonder if those who really need to hear those words (I.E. those of other faiths, especially those who demean us and our beliefs), actual hear it, but it is nice to have it spoken so boldly.
